Over six days in August 1835, the New York Sun published a series of articles claiming that renowned astronomer Sir John Herschel, using a revolutionary new telescope in South Africa, had discovered life on the Moon — bat-winged humanoids, blue unicorns, bipedal beavers, and vast lunar forests of quartz crystal trees. The paper’s circulation reportedly became the largest of any daily newspaper on Earth within days. Crowds gathered outside the Sun’s offices. A committee of Yale scientists reportedly traveled to New York demanding to see the original scientific journal the story claimed to be reprinting. There was no journal, no telescope discovery, and Herschel himself knew nothing about any of it until he read about his own findings in the press.
The series was almost certainly written by Sun reporter Richard Adams Locke, though the paper never issued a formal retraction or named an author, and Locke himself gave conflicting accounts for the rest of his life about whether it was intended as satire or straightforward circulation-boosting fiction. Locke later claimed he meant the increasingly absurd details — winged “man-bats” engaging in what the article delicately called activities “improper to describe” — as an obvious parody of overreaching scientific speculation and religious astronomy popular at the time. Almost no readers caught the joke, if it was one. Edgar Allan Poe, who had published his own lunar hoax story just weeks earlier, complained bitterly that the Sun had stolen his idea and executed it far more successfully.
The Astronomer Who Never Knew He’d “Found” Life on the Moon
When news of the sensation eventually reached Sir John Herschel at his actual observation post at the Cape of Good Hope, he reportedly found the whole affair amusing at first, joking that his real observations could never live up to what the Sun had invented for him. His amusement soured over subsequent years as visitors and correspondents continued asking him serious questions about the bat-people, forcing him to issue repeated denials for the rest of his career. The Sun never paid a legal or financial price; if anything, the hoax cemented its position as one of the most-read papers in the country and helped popularize the “penny press” model of cheap, sensational mass-market journalism that would define American newspapers for the rest of the century.
What kept the Great Moon Hoax circulating in respectable company well after its exposure was the genuine, unresolved nineteenth-century uncertainty about the Moon’s habitability — serious astronomers of the era, including Herschel’s own father William, had speculated in print about the plausibility of lunar life, and popular lecture circuits regularly debated whether the Moon supported vegetation or atmosphere. Locke’s hoax worked because it wasn’t complete fantasy to 1835 readers; it was a plausible extension of live scientific debate, dressed up with invented details real astronomers hadn’t yet ruled out. Modern historians of science still cite the episode as the moment American media discovered that a story readers want to believe will survive almost any scrutiny, so long as it’s printed with enough confident, technical detail.
