In the Venetian Lagoon, between Venice and Lido, sits a small crescent-shaped island so feared by locals that fishermen reportedly still avoid its waters. Poveglia has been called the most haunted island on Earth, a title earned through centuries of plague, madness, and mass death compressed into less than seventeen acres of Italian soil.
Poveglia’s dark history began in earnest during the bubonic plague outbreaks that repeatedly ravaged Venice from the 14th through 18th centuries. As the Black Death overwhelmed the city, authorities designated Poveglia a quarantine station, exiling the infected and the dying to the island to prevent the plague from spreading further. Historical estimates suggest that as many as 160,000 plague victims may have died on Poveglia over the centuries, with bodies burned en masse on the island in enormous pits — so many that locals claim roughly half the island’s soil is composed of human ash, and that walking the beaches today, one can still find fragments of bone worked up through the earth by the tide.
The Asylum That Sealed Its Fate
If the plague pits weren’t enough to cement Poveglia’s dark reputation, what happened in 1922 sealed it permanently. A psychiatric hospital was constructed on the island, built in part atop the mass graves of plague victims. Patients and later visitors described hearing anguished screaming and moaning throughout the building, sounds staff attributed to the restless spirits of the plague dead disturbed by the hospital’s construction. The most persistent and disturbing legend concerns the hospital’s chief physician, who allegedly performed crude lobotomies and unethical experiments on patients using primitive surgical tools, including a hand drill, and was ultimately said to have been driven mad by the horrors he inflicted — throwing himself, or being pushed by vengeful spirits, from the hospital’s bell tower to his death. Staff at the time reported that a nurse who witnessed his fall claimed his body was still moving after it hit the ground, choked by unseen hands, before finally going still.
The hospital closed in 1968, and Poveglia has sat abandoned and officially off-limits ever since, its buildings crumbling under decades of neglect. Yet the island has never stopped attracting stories. Trespassers and the rare researchers granted access describe overwhelming feelings of dread the moment they step off their boats, alongside disembodied screaming, unexplained cold spots, and shadowy figures glimpsed moving between the ruined hospital wards. Paranormal investigation teams who have conducted expeditions to the island report electronic voice phenomena capturing what sound like moaning voices and scratching sounds consistent with something being dragged across stone floors, echoing the plague era’s mass burials.
Local Venetian fishermen have long refused to cast their nets in the waters surrounding Poveglia, citing generations-old superstitions about bones and ash rising with the catch, and stories of boats that drift too close at night reporting their crews overcome with sudden panic or nausea. Even Italy’s government has struggled to find a use for the island: a 2014 attempt to auction a 99-year lease for redevelopment into a luxury resort collapsed when investors reportedly balked at the site’s reputation, and to this day Poveglia remains largely uninhabited, sealed off from casual visitors by law as much as by legend.
Historians point to plague, isolation, and the very real horrors of early 20th-century psychiatric practice as more than sufficient explanation for the island’s grim aura. But for the ghost hunters who’ve recorded its screams, and the Venetians who still won’t fish its shores, Poveglia remains a place where centuries of suffering never fully settled into the ground.
